Altadena Teen Girls Fire Recovery

After the fiery chaos tore through Los Angeles this past month, our communities unleashed a fierce spirit of resilience—like a phoenix rising from the ashes! Leading the charge is one badass eighth-grader.

Avery Colvert, from Eliot Arts Magnet School in Altadena, CA, with a heart full of empathy and ambition, wanted to do something to help her friends and other teen girls affected by the fires. Enter The Altadena Girls Fire Recovery, a mission dedicated to empowering young girls by providing them with the essentials they need to thrive and brighten their path as they recover from such insurmountable loss.

This bold initiative is a testament to the power of community, lifting up those who lost everything to the flames and proving that when we unite, we can burn brighter than any raging fire.

We're talking clothes, personal care/hygiene products, makeup, beauty essentials, backpacks, suitcases, even stickers – the little things that pack a mighty punch in the lives of young girls. Sure, these might seem like non-essential items, but they are truly the secret weapons that help teens and young girls move forward with confidence and feel totally rad about themselves. These items are much more than aesthetic “extras”, they offer building blocks for self-expression, helping young ladies to feel good about themselves and rock their unique identities.

We stumbled upon Altadena Girls on social media, thanks to the fabulous Kathleen Hanna, the fierce frontwoman of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and The Julie Ruin (thanks, Kathleen!). After only a few weeks, their cause has gone beyond viral. What started as a "free store" for young gals directly affected by the Eaton and Palisades Fires, has transformed into a full resource center and community led by volunteers, even landing them a permanent space in Old Town Pasadena (coming soon!) where they'll provide mental health services, dance and movement classes, homework and music rooms, and event spaces.

Isn't it remarkable what we can accomplish when we join forces? Avery's genius idea is not just selfless; it's a spark that can ignite inspiration in us all!

Support the Altadena Girls with (the) curious nothing!

We're absolutely stoked to rally behind this fantastic cause. With your support, we can make a real difference in the lives of these young girls and the community as a whole.

Here's the scoop: every time you buy a book, we’re donating a slice of the sale to the Altadena Teen Girls Recovery Fund.
