first. issue. ever.

The debut issue of (the) curious nothing mag/zine has no theme in particular. It does contain the eclectic works of a number of poets, artists, musicians, and many other badass creative humans representing different walks of life, from cities and small places (and everywhere between) across the country and beyond. Plus, you’ll find a few other oddball, adventurous tidbits and articles sprinkled throughout the publication.

THE FAILURE OF DESCARTES’
EPISTEMOLOGICAL ENTERPRISE

Ryan Buynak has been described as “the most prolific poet you’ve never heard of.” He is a pugilist, punching poetry into existence as a battle against death. He has a baker’s dozen books under his belt, and that
is why he walks funny.

As I close my eyes,
the image of a star
exploding overwhelms
all my senses.
The colors and particles
come bursting forth,
scattering across an
endless black space,
before drowning into
the edges of my consciousness.
Psychedelic
guitar riffs fade into the
distance of this awe
inspiring color-scape.
The scene morphs and
twists as textures, tones,
and lights dance. Slowly
a world that can only
exist during an acid trip
forms in front of me. It
was here, in this otherworldly
realm, that this
journey began over a
decade ago.

Misirlou Peeka

Misirlou Peeka was first taught art by their mother, Marlena Lupica. They went on to attend art programs at The Art Institute of Atlanta and Georgia State University for eight years as an undergrad. They have lived in Northern Ohio, Atlanta, Georgia, and Montreal, Quebec before settling down for good in Long Beach, California with their partner and pets. Since graduating, Misirlou has been compelled to create a body of highly detailed handmade collages using an assortment of music memorabilia they collected during more than a decade as a DJ, and discarded materials found in Montreal garbage piles.

Their work has been inspired by a combination of experiences such as untreated mental illness, psychedelic experiments, absurdism as a natural progression after immersing in nihilism, and life as a queer person. Cannabis consumption has been crucial to the creation of these collages, and the artist dreams of displaying their work in places where people who are under the influence of psychoactives can get the most out of viewing it.
