A Micro Interview with Harry Katz & The Pistachios

The Pistachios have been up to quite a bit since our interview, and (the) curious nothing has had the pleasure of seeing them live at Permanent Records Roadhouse in Highland Park, as well as participating in the fabulous Pistachioland extravaganzas. Seeing them live is all high energy, lots of moving, sweating, and OH YES! Groovy tunes to shake yr booty to…if you get a chance GO SEE THEM!
We asked Harry Katz a few questions in a quick “micro” interview.
Here’s the skinny...
(THE) CN: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITES IN LOS ANGELES? TO PLAY? TO SEE A SHOW?
HARRY KATZ: WE’VE LOST SO MANY CLUBS, BUT THE ONES THAT REMAIN THAT ARE GREAT ARE ZEBULON, SILVERLAKE LOUNGE, LODGEROOM, THE MOROCCAN, PERMANENT RECORDS ROADHOUSE, AND GOLD DIGGERS.
(THE) CN: LET’S TALK TACOS. WHAT ARE THE BEST IN LA?
HARRY KATZ: MY FAVORITE MEXICAN RESTAURANT IN THE CITY IS PROBABLY EL TEPEYAC CAFE IN BOYLE HEIGHTS!
(THE) CN: WHAT/WHO INFLUENCES YOUR MUSIC?
HARRY KATZ: TOM WAITS, THE B-52S, THE MUPPETS, THE BLUES BROTHERS, WORLD INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY, IZAAK OPATZ, AND SO SO SO MUCH MORE. I FIND INSPIRATION IN EVERYTHING! WE WENT TO SEE THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, AND THEY DID THIS SIMPLE REPEAT-AF- TER-ME STYLE PLEDGE BEFOREHAND THE MOVIE. IT GOT PEOPLE SO INVOLVED! I LOVED IT, SO I WENT THAT NIGHT AND WROTE MY OWN VERSION FOR OUR SHOW BASED ON MY OWN PERSONAL AFFIRMATIONS. THEN I HAD A PUPPET ON STAGE TO PERFORM IT AND LEAD THE CROWD IN THE AFFIRMATION. IT WAS MADNESS, JUST A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL OF FUN WHEN THINGS GET THAT INTERACTIVE AND UNEXPECTED.
(THE) CN: WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE REST OF THIS YEAR?
HARRY KATZ: OUR GOALS ARE SIMPLY TO REACH AS MANY PEOPLE AS WE CAN THIS YEAR, CREAT- ING A SPACE FOR EXCITEMENT, FOR DANCING, FOR REVERENCE, AND FOR FUN.
(THE) CN: CAN YOU LEAVE US WITH A FEW WISE WORDS?
HARRY KATZ: “WHERE EVER YOU GO, THERE YOU ARE” - BUCKAROO BANZAI (AND OTHERS).
Harry Katz & The Pistachios combine Harry’s uniquely raspy voice with raw and powerful Rock and Roll. The ten members that make up Th e Pistachios command every stage they are on. While the band plays a set of unrelentingly up tempo numbers to shake and groove to, Harry’s lyrics dig up a darker inner world right beneath the surface.
